Description
The US Army introduced the M-3 trench knife in 1943 for troopers carrying arms not configured to accept a bayonet. The wide use of Thompsons and Carbines by paratroopers meant the M-3 was issued in large numbers to those elite airborne troops. Often worn strapped to the calf, the M-3 trench knife quickly became part of the paratrooper mystique, and a symbol of those "devils in baggy pants". The M-3, as well as the similar M-1 Carbine bayonet adopted late in WW2, have been of great interest to collectors for decades, leading noted knife expert Bill Walters, a contemporary of M.H. Cole and Larry Thomas, to write an authoritative reference book on the subject in 2016. This SIGNED "US & ALLIED MILITARY KNIVES VOL. 1" WW2 M-3 TRENCH KNIFE REFERENCE BOOK is in near mint, unread condition, with only some light scattered storage wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the book is in near mint shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it's signed by the author via stick label on the title page, boasts an elegantly illustrated dust jacket over hardcovers, and sports 197 pages full of descriptive text, period pictures, and color photographs of blade dated, blade marked, and guard marked US M-3 trench knives of WW2, including those by Boker, Robeson, Aerial, PAL, Kinfolks, Case, Camillus, Utica, and Imperial, exact production figures and a rarity index for those makers, all kinds of experimental and limited production Case M-3s with 337-6Q style handles, V-42 style handles, or straight guards, experimental Colonial and Western M-3s, beautiful M-6 leather scabbards by Viner Bros., Milsco, Barwood, L&C, Moose, and SBL, gorgeous M-8 plastic scabbards by B.M. Co., many mint in the box examples of M-3s with M-6 or M-8 sheaths, a 22 page section on the similar M-1 Carbine bayonet adopted late in WW2, executed with the same thorough detail, and a plethora of other invaluable information.
