Description
NOTE: this listing is only for the software and manual. You must supply your own Raspberry Pi (model 3B only, not 3B+ or any other model) plus an 8GB microSD card. You can choose to get nothing shipped to you, just a download link, to save on shipping. Included is an image file to be loaded on your microSD card. Do this, plug the SD card into your Raspberry Pi 3B, and you will have a working, fully-configured OpenVPN server. Also included are a PDF of an extensive manual that will explain how to do everything, and the certificate files to be loaded into your phones.
This item is the same as my Grandstream OpenVPN Server kit (also on eBay) that includes hardware, just without the hardware. You can download everything you need, and supply your own hardware. It is perfect for those who already have hardware, or who are not in the US and want to save on shipping cost and time.
Once you order and pay for this item, you will get a link to download your DVD image which includes everything. It may take as much as a day as I have to create and test your server image -- it is customized for you with your own serial number, password, dyDNS address, and certificate files.
I can't figure out how to create an eBay listing for a download without including a shipping charge. So this listing is nominally for a DVD and a printed manual, and the shipping charge will be for those items. You'll also get the download link mentioned above, so you can get started right away. If you don't need anything shipped to you, say so in a "note to seller" and I will refund what you have paid for shipping (and not ship anything).
The remainder of this listing, including all the pictures, describes the complete kit including hardware. Remember, you
don't
get the hardware!

This is a fully-configured OpenVPN server for use with Grandstream IP phones that have OpenVPN client support built in. In many installations it will be plug-and-play requiring only phone configuration and minimal router configuration to use. It is based on a reliable and powerful Raspberry Pi 3B microcomputer, and will support more than ten phones. This is version 2, which is considerably easier to configure.
Use this server to securely locate Grandstream phones remotely from a central IP PBX, anywhere there is an internet connection. Typical applications include an office with a Grandstream UCM-series PBX needing to support phones in remote locations such as employee homes. The server will also work with non-Grandstream IP PBXs though a bit more configuration may be required. It is intended to be used with any of the models of Grandstream phones with OpenVPN support. With this server, remote phones will simply be extensions of your office phone system, with access to all features available to local office phones.
Note that this
isn't
a general-purpose VPN server. You can't connect computers, smartphones, etc. to your local network with it. What it does, and does well, is to connect Grandstream VoIP phones to your local network.
Note that this
won't
work with softphone apps including GS Wave. For a softphone app to work it would have to have OpenVPN support built in to the app, that is configured the same as that in a Grandstream phone, and I don't know of any softphone apps that do so; use of the phone's OpenVPN support (if it has any) will not work as it would try to route all of the smartphone's internet traffic over the VPN and the server isn't set up to allow that. One possible exception might be certain iPhones that allow VPN traffic to be routed on an app-by-app basis -- I have no experience with this and don't know if it would work or if the capability even exists.
Included is
an image of
a DVD containing certificate files needed for configuring phones, and a very comprehensive 38-page illustrated
manual containing full installation, configuration, and extensive troubleshooting information, which is the distilled result of several months of development.
The software and configuration data are supplied on an 8 GB Micro SD card; a backup image of the card is supplied on the DVD
image
.
There's no magic here -- yes you can buy the same hardware for about and download the open source software needed to build this yourself. But there is a pretty steep learning curve, and you can expect to spend a day setting it up, plus weeks or months to get it working if you aren't already experienced with OpenVPN, certificate creation, the Raspberry Pi, and the Raspbian version of Linux. What's your time worth?
There are a few simple configuration steps, mostly consisting of setting up your phone to use the VPN. You'll also need to make simple changes to your router. All this is described in the accompanying manual, along with a full description of how the server is configured so you will understand enough to make changes and troubleshoot them should the need arise. If you are intending to use the server as supplied, most likely no configuration of the server is required.
In case of trouble, extensive troubleshooting information is provided in the manual. Also, we will provide free technical support to the extent possible while working remotely.
