1488 Qiriq-Yer, Giray Khans AR akce .57gm 14mm AH893 Mengli Giray 1466-1514ex Album graded VF nice strike full date
late 15th century dated coins (especially with full dates) are very seldomly encountered
Album mis-attributed this piece as A2068. Its actually A2070
Although the Mengli Giray silver akces are considered common, this is a tougher mint
The exact location of this mint is unknown but it was probably along the western coast of the Crimean Peninsula possibly south of Baghicha Saray.
Footnotes from the Headlands: (excuse my sense of humor) The song Crimea River comes to mind
Mengli Giray was the 6
th
son of Haci I Giray and ascended to the Giray throne in 1466 for several months before being deposed by his brother Nur Devlet. He was restored for a 2

time in 1469 but lost the throne again due to a rebellion of his brothers in 1475, and was captured by the Ottomans in Kaffa and brought to Istanbul. He was forced to recognize Ottoman suzerainty over the Crimean Khanate and returned to the throne in 1478. He made great strides in developing the Crimean Tartar Statehood and founded the fortress at Ozu. In 1502, he defeated the last khan of the Golden Horde and claimed himself Khagan. He died in 1515.
