    Description

1888 British 2 Pence Silver Maundy Coin.
A very unique 1888 Maundy silver coin.  This is the second smallest denomination of Maundy coins.  These were minted as ceremonial pieces and not for circulation.  Usually handed out by the reigning British monarch at the time to selected deserving individuals once per year.
The royal maundy is an ancient ceremony which has its origins in the commandment Christ gave after washing the feet of his disciples on the day before good Friday.
Maundy money have remained in much the same form since 1670 and are traditionally struck in sterling silver.
The obverse of the coin shows an older bust of Queen Victoria facing left, wearing the small imperial crown, a long veil falling behind her head, a pearl necklace and earrings.
Reverse is within an open oak wreath with the numeral 2.  Divided by the value is the date 1888.
A very rare and unique piece that was not minted to circulate, but only handed out by the reigning British Monarch.
